Why does SEBI care about digital accessibility, and why is this no longer optional?
SEBI has issued a mandatory digital accessibility circular requiring all SEBI-regulated entities to ensure that their investor-facing digital platforms are accessible to persons with disabilities, in accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
Under this mandate, regulated entities are required to ensure that all websites, portals, mobile applications, and digital investor interfaces are compliant with WCAG AA-aligned accessibility standards, as prescribed under Indian accessibility frameworks such as IS 17802:2021 and GIGW 3.0.
The circular further requires the appointment of IAAP-certified accessibility auditors, formal accessibility audits of all digital platforms, remediation of identified gaps, and submission of compliance reports within defined timelines, followed by ongoing annual audits.
